Commanding Officers are what really make the Advance Wars games stand out to me, not just in strategy RPGs, but in the Wars series in general. I've listed all of them below, but for simplicity's sake, I've listed their AW2 D2Ds, or Dual Strike if needed.
Orange Star is the real star of all the countries in Advance Wars, often getting featured the most, and is based off of America. Hatchi was always the shopkeeper, but offically became playable in AW2, and Nell's little sister, Rachel, and Jake were playable in Dual Strike. Hatchi is often implied to be Yuan Delta, not only a CO in Super Famicoms, but the commander on the back of the original Famicom Wars, where he says that he's looking for a successor. Re-Boot Camp also confirmed that Nell and Rachel's mom is Caroline, a CO from Super Famicom Wars who looks nearly identical to Nell.
CO | D2D | CO Power | Super CO Power | Hit | Miss | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Andy | None! | Hyper Repair | Hyper Upgrade | Mechanics | Waking up early | |
Max | Tank buff, but indirect units are less powerful | Max Force | Max Blast | Weight training | Studying | |
Sami | Foot soldier buff, can capture properties easier | Double Time | Victory March | Chocolate | Cowards | |

Rachel | Units healing at bases will heal 3 HP instead of 2 HP | Lucky Lass | Covering Fire | Hard work | Excuses |
Blue Moon is based off of Russia, and is often shown as the rivals to Orange Star, with Olaf and Grit even said to be from Orange Star originally. Colins was introduced in AW2 and his big sister, Sasha, was introduced, both being children of extremely wealthy parents, possibly a nod to Billy Gates, a CO from Super Famicom Wars who also comes from wealthy parents.
CO | D2D | CO Power | Super CO Power | Hit | Miss | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Olaf | Units have normal movement in snow weather, but snow movement in rain weather | Blizzard | Winter Fury | Warm boots | Rain clouds | |

Yellow Comet, renamed Gold Comet in Re-Boot Camp, is based off of Japan. Kanebi's mentor, Sensei, debuts in AW2, and his friend, Grimm, debuts in Dual Strike. Sensei could be, and is outright stated in the Japanese versions, to be Yamamoto, one of the few COs in Super Famicom Wars to have a scary ability.
CO | D2D | CO Power | Super CO Power | Hit | Miss | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Kanbei | All units are generally more powerful, but are 10% more expensive | Morale Boost | Samurai Spirit | Sonja | Computers | |
Sonja | Can see more in fog of war and health is hidden to the enemy, increased counterattack, but increased bad luck | Enhanced Vision | Counter Break | Computers | Bugs | |
Sensei | Foot soldiers and B-Copters are more powerful, but other ground units and naval units are less powerful | Copter Command | Airborne Assult | Lazy, rainy days | Busy malls | |
Grimm | All units have increased firepower at the cost of reduced defense | Knuckleduster | Haymaker | Donuts | Planning |
Green Earth are based off of some European power, with some people saying England and others saying Germany. Jess debuts in AW2 to be the land to Eagle's air and Drake's sea, and Javier debuts in Dual Strike.
CO | D2D | CO Power | Super CO Power | Hit | Miss | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Eagle | Air units are more powerful and consume less fuel, but naval units are less powerful | Lighting Drive | Lighting Strike | Lucky goggles | Swimming | |
Drake | Naval units are more powerful and have normal movement in rain, but air units are less powerful, and has a random chance to cause rain | Tsunami | Typhoon | The open sea | High places | |
Jess | All ground vehicle units are more powerful, but all other units are less powerful | Turbo Charge | Overdrive | Danelions | Unfit COs | |
Javier | Indirect damage is reduced, and COM towers grant a bigger bonus per COM tower. | Tower Shield | Tower of Power | Honor | Retreating |
Black Hole are the big bad of the series and are based on the future and otherworldly invaders, and I love these guys. Lash is probably gonna get her own shrine sometime soon because I love her so much. Sturm was the only known Black Hole CO in Advance Wars, until AW2, which introduced Flak, Lash, Adder, and Hawke, and then Sturm promptly died at the end of it. To replace the last batch of Black Hole COs and Sturm in Dual Strike, there was Von Bolt and his Bolt Guard, Jugger, Koal, and Kindle who are three COs who are worse versions of their AW2 counterparts except for Kindle, who is a better Lash.
CO | D2D | CO Power | Super CO Power | Hit | Miss | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Sturm | All units are more powerful and move at 1 cost on all terrain | None! | Meteor Strike | Invasions | Peace | |
Flak | Increased good and bad luck | Brute Force | Barbaric Blow | Meat | Veggies | |
Lash | All units (except air units) are more powerful depending on the terrain | Terrain Tactics | Prime Tactics | Getting her way | Not getting it | |
Adder | None, but has the fastest charging CO power | Sideslip | Sidewinder | His own face | Dirty things | |
Hawke | All units are more powerful | Black Wave | Black Storm | Black coffee | Incompetence | |
Jugger | Increased good luck and bad luck | Overclock | System Crash | Energy | Static Electricity | |
Koal | All units are more powerful on roads | Forced March | Trail of Woe | Proverbs, ramen | Fondue | |
Kindle | All units are more powerful on properties | Urban Blight | High Society | Anything chic | Anything passe | |
Von Bolt | All units are more powerful | None! | Ex Machina | Long life | Young 'uns! |
So, Black Hole has one more CO that isn't listed above. In the Advance Wars mission "Andy Times two!", it's revealed that Black Hole made a clone of Andy to start trouble. Since this was basically just Andy, the original Advance Wars just used Andy's sprites. Re-Boot Camp, however, went above and beyond, making Clone Andy his own CO, with new sprites and even a unique theme and CO power cutscenes. He's even slightly different from Andy, where he doesn't have Hyper Upgrade when you play him in AW2 mode.
